Concrete form release agents are chemical substances that are applied to the inner surfaces of formwork to prevent concrete from bonding to the formwork or other substrates. These agents provide an even finish by lubricating the formwork, allowing for the concrete to be easily detached from the forms without leaving residue or causing damage to the surface. The primary purposes of concrete form release agents are to prevent adhesion, make it easier to de-mould concrete structures and prevent blemishes caused by concrete sticking to the formwork. These agents are cost-effective and are typically used in precast and in poured-in-place concrete construction.
The two main types of concrete form release are barrier and chemically active. Barrier-type form release agents create a physical barrier between the form and concrete. They can be petroleum-based or water-based and are applied directly to the formwork before filling it with concrete. An example of a water-based, non-toxic and environmentally friendly surface consolidation agent is MasterFinish RL 212. It is compatible with various substrates, including wood, metal, polyester or plywood.
Chemically active form release agents contain an active ingredient that combines calcium and hydroxide in fresh concrete, creating a metallic, waterproof soap that results in concrete free of surface discolouration. This chemical activation forms a micro-thin layer that inhibits bonding with the concrete, preventing concrete from adhering to treated surfaces and formwork. As chemically active form release agents produce fewer stains, surface irregularities and bug holes compared to barrier-type form release agents, they are typically used for architectural concrete applications. Additionally, they are more cost-effective as they require a smaller amount compared to barrier-release agents.
For preventative measures of concrete adhesion to construction tools, sites and formworks as well as rust prevention, Formol offers a non-staining protective bond breaker solution, suitable for timber, steel or fibreglass application to prevent freshly placed concrete from sticking to formwork or machinery. Similarly, MasterFinish 222 provides a high-coverage and low-viscosity solution for all types of concrete formwork to be easily stripped and primed. It is also compatible with timber and steel forms and will not impair the bond of subsequent materials.
