Concrete curing compounds are liquid polymers that are key components in the setting of great quality concrete due to their ability to offer moisture retention, temperature regulation and maintenance of cement particle hydration throughout the setting process. As cement is a hydraulic substance, it requires water to gain strength. If there is too much or too little water present in the concrete, the setting process can be detrimental to the structure. Environmental factors and temperature fluctuation can also affect the setting process.

Concrete curing compounds help to control the temperature by retaining heat in cold environments and reducing surface temperatures in hot weather, acting as a protective shield. This is achieved through the polymer binders in curing compounds, which provide a uniform moisture barrier and distribution when applied to freshly laid concrete.

There are different types of curing compounds each with distinct properties and benefits. Membrane-forming curing compounds, for example, are solvent-based and are suitable for smooth or rough surfaces and extreme weather conditions. They are optimal for reducing surface cracking and concrete strength. They can be applied by roller or sprayed on, leaving a non-yellowing polished finish without compromising the adhesion of any additional cement-based toppings. Similarly, water-based curing compounds are designed for long-term moisture retention and offer an environmentally friendly solution to concrete settings, as they have low volatile organic compounds. They are also easily applicable and will not compromise the adhesion of any additional cement-based toppings.

Evaporation retarders, on the other hand, are used to address surface drying issues and provide immediate short-term protection against water evaporation. They are applicable to concrete containing water-reducing, retarding or accelerating admixtures and compatible with membrane-forming curing compounds.  They are particularly effective with large cement pours as they are designed to slow the rate of moisture evaporation, preventing surface cracking in rapid-drying weather conditions.

Concrete curing compounds offer a cost-effective solution for regulating temperature and moisture during the curing process. In contrast to conventional methods like continuous water spraying or the use of curing blankets, these compounds do not require ongoing monitoring, resulting in reduced labour costs. However, selecting the right type of curing compound is essential to ensure the concrete cures properly, maintains its strength and durability, and meets the desired aesthetic and performance criteria.

At Komerco, we offer high-quality concrete curing compounds, suitable for a range of projects from Master Builders Solutions. If you have any product-related enquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact our team today.
