Concrete surface hardeners are specialised chemical compounds applied to concrete surfaces, forming a protective barrier that improves the durability, abrasion resistance and overall longevity of the concrete. These concrete hardening agents react with the naturally present calcium hydroxide in the concrete, filling its pores and increasing its resistance to wear and surface damage. They are beneficial for industrial and commercial spaces that are exposed to heavy traffic or environmental stressors as they protect concrete structures from cracking, freeze-thaw damage, or corrosion.
Whether used on freshly laid concrete or existing structures, they contribute to cost-effective concrete solutions by reducing maintenance costs and extending concrete longevity. There are two main types of concrete hardeners - dry-shake hardeners and liquid hardeners, each offering distinct benefits. Choosing which concrete hardener works best for you is dependent on the desired finish, application speed and specific requirements of your project.
For example, dry shake hardeners are a mixture of cement, aggregate and admixture in a dry powder form. They are troweled directly onto freshly laid concrete, forming a strong bond with the concrete structure. As a result, dry shake hardeners provide more durable protection compared to liquid hardeners. This is due to their application being thicker and denser, which enhances the structure's overall resilience and resistance to abrasion. Additionally, they provide the structure with slip resistance, colouration, and texture. The choice between iron-aggregate and silica carbide compounds for dry-shake hardeners is contingent on your project's requirements, as each option offers distinct advantages.
Liquid hardeners, on the other hand, are made of sodium silicates or magnesium fluor-silicates dissolved in water to seal, harden and dustproof concrete surfaces. These compounds seal, harden and dustproof concrete surfaces through a chemical reaction that occurs as the hardener penetrates the concrete, sealing the concrete surface. Liquid hardeners are typically sprayed or rolled directly onto freshly laid or existing concrete, leaving a matte appearance without altering the concrete colour. They are well-suited for both indoor and outdoor applications and are valuable for projects seeking to reduce construction time as they tend to dry and cure faster than dry-shake hardeners. MasterTop 333, in particular, helps to prolong the lifespan of dense surfaces by effectively penetrating and dust-proofing difficult concrete surfaces.
At Komerco, we offer dry-shake and liquid concrete hardeners, each designed for a specific purpose, sourced from trusted brands such as Master Builders Solutions and Sika.
