Protective Coatings 

Concrete protective coatings or concrete sealers are used to protect concrete surfaces from elements that cause the structures to degrade, such as moisture, abrasion, harsh chemicals, or carbonisation. There are many types of concrete protective coatings, including epoxy coatings, polymer-modified cementitious coatings, polyurethane, polyurea, impregnant or water-repellent (silanes and siloxanes), or acrylic sealers. 

Concrete coatings are paramount in construction as they enhance the strength and durability of concrete structures by providing a protective barrier against environmental stressors. Some provide improved chemical resistance and have non-slip additives making them ideal for industrial and commercial structures. By safeguarding the structural integrity of concrete with concrete coatings and sealers, the overall lifespan is increased, reducing maintenance and lifecycle costs. 

Many concrete surfaces are only protected with exterior-grade paint, however, this is often insufficient with Australia’s harsh climate and in coastal and metropolitan areas. The length and protection that each concrete protective coating provides heavily depend on the type of product used and the project's specific needs. Traffic, chemical exposure, UV exposure, moisture exposure and many other factors can have a bearing on the most suitable type of product. Further, concrete coatings are compatible with a wide variety of concrete substrates such as concrete flooring and structural elements as well as larger infrastructure projects such as bridges, overpasses and tunnels.
