Repair mortars & epoxies
Concrete repair is crucial for damaged structures in order to prevent any further damage and to extend the service life of the structure. Repairing structures is significantly more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than replacing. Concrete repair mortars and epoxies are effective solutions for repairing and strengthening damaged concrete structures. The damage can occur from fluctuating temperatures, corrosion to steel reinforcement or concrete cancer and water ingress.
Concrete repair mortars are split into two different groups based on their chemistry: cementitious and epoxy.
Cementitious repair mortars are used widely across the construction industry from structural repairs of roads, bridges, commercial and residential dwellings to cosmetic repairs of defects.
For longer-terms repairs, many cementitious repair mortars are combined with additives called ‘corrosion inhibitors’ that have anti-corrosion properties. Corrosion inhibitors help prevent rust to form on the structural steel within the concrete, further increasing the structure’s life.
Epoxy repair mortars are polymer-based mortars that are typically made up of epoxy resins, solvent, binder, mineral fillers and other additives. Epoxy mortars are commonly used for eroded or cracked concrete substrates to reinstate their strength. Epoxy repair mortars provide high-strength and rapid curing times with many providing a non-permeable repair option that can withstand the elements and other factors causing concrete damage. There are a wide variety of epoxy repair mortars available providing a versatile solution for many applications.
The main differences between cementitious and epoxy repair mortars are their relative strength and setting characteristics as well as their costs. Cementitious repair mortars are used for deeper applications where return to service speed is not critical. Epoxy mortars have stronger adhesive properties, greater strengths and reduced porosity, making them better suited for more durable repairs in aggressive environments, or in thinner applications. Both epoxy and cementitious repair mortar solutions are widely used with proven effectiveness. The choice to use is dependent on the specific needs of the situation.
At Komerco, we supply high quality repair mortars and epoxies from brands notoriously known for their repair solutions.
